It has been a while since I connected through newsletters, so here are my thoughts. How many of you are getting caught up in the busyness of life and pushing aside the really important things, like focusing on your internal needs that are screaming for some attention? As a result of moving, I’m aware of how caught up we can be in these temporal things. The world is always calling us to pay attention to physical things that may never fully satisfy.
Like many of you, I tend to get highly focused on a task or projects and other things get put on the back burner. Have you ever moved from a larger place and downsized into a smaller one? That is what I have been focused on over the last year. It was truly a project of selling things on Facebook Marketplace, taking unwanted items to Goodwill, and going through pictures and files to make decisions about. Not to mention the hundreds of books that I gave to the library so others could utilize them.
Then there was the selling of the house, negotiating on price, working with inspection repairs, and getting settled in a new home. I feel like my attention has gone toward these physical things, and my spiritual life has been shoved aside.
The Bible encourages us to not be friends of the world. Sometimes the worldly desires of status, gaining possessions, family conflicts, and being drawn to vices take precedence over our spiritual relationship with God. In the Passion translation of James 4:4 says: “You have become spiritual adulterers who are having an affair, and an unholy relationship with the world. Don’t you know that flirting with the world’s values places you at odds with God?”
Recently, the assassination of Charlie Kirk threw me into processing of how someone so genuine, who had his values placed on a Godly kingdom, could be taken out so quickly with one pull of the trigger. He was a hero in my eyes of someone who wasn’t drawn to be friends with the world but rather exhibited such courage to stand strong in what he valued. He wasn’t afraid to make a stand and constantly questioned what people believed. My heart goes out to his family and followers as they grieve this man who was so committed.
I have had to question whether I’ve given too much of my attention to physical things. Have I made them my sole focus and forgotten where I really need to give my attention. In my mind, the idea of physical downsizing has much more to do with shedding off the things in your life that don’t serve you well. Things you are holding onto that need to be let go of, like old resentments, hurts, and traumas. I was amazed at how tightly I had held onto greeting cards, clothing, things that I didn’t need, and even furniture that I no longer wanted to decorate with.
Now that much of the clutter is out of the way, I am coming into alignment with what is really important in my life. My biggest passion is being able to lead people that are ready and willing to letting go of encumbrances so they can allow God to do inner healing in their hearts. Also I’m enjoying living with more simplicity so I’m not being distracted by house maintenance.
I encourage you to look at what you are holding onto. Are there things that you no longer need to have either in your external or internal world? If so, give me a call for a complimentary session to see how you can start this process.
